I am a web developer with over 14 years experience working with agencies and start-ups. I believe in the agile process of software development and am a strong advocate of test-driven development and continuous deployment.
I believe in personal development and have coached over a hundred developers in full-stack web development. I enjoy teaching and mentoring and have pioneered a unique approach of delivering intensive code courses followed by mentored work experience, helping dozens of web developers to find mid-level jobs.
I am interested in the start-up tech scene, often attending meet-ups, hackathons and talks. I recently spoke at TakeOff Conf in Lille, France on cultivating web development talent.
I am interested in start-ups and entrepreneurship. In 2003, my frst web development project for Mathias and Sons was entered for the regional Shell Technology and Enterprise (STEP) award, and I won a local and regional heat. Based upon my performance in both the project, demonstration and my presentation, I was named “the most enterprising student in the South West of England 2003”, something which I'm rather proud of!
In my spare time I am interested in politics, reading and playing chess.
I want to achieve the goal of signing up 100 individuals to my new product business, bringing a blended learning approach to part-time learners. This will involve digitising four years of We Got Coders' course content, developing our marketing strategy and working weekends to deliver lessons!
I'd also like to work on a couple of side-project ideas that I have. Watch this space! If I can incorporate a couple of new languages in with this then I'm interested in learning Elixir or Scala, but I haven't decided yet.
I'd like to take on another part-time CTO role for a product or start-up, so I'll see what enquiries I get.
Why I Got Into Web Development
I love the creativity of web development and it's instant gratification when you can see the results of your efforts on the screen, or in your test suite. It's very rewarding working closely with entrepreneurs and clients on their products, and being in a position to enable their businesses to grow.
I have worked for various clients both individually and through my own Ruby consultancy, We Got Coders. With my junior developer colleagues, I have built a variety of sites, some of which you can read about on the client's section of this website, or on my
I have lead and trained several teams in Ruby development, focussing especially on agile delivery, using tools such as Pivotal Tracker
