Careers

We Got Coders are currently looking to fill the following vacancies:

Senior Ruby Developer: Instructor & Mentor

Remuneration: £80,000 (negotiable) permanent, or short-term contracts available, salary based on experience. Linked to performance related bonuses amounting to around 100K / year

Following our recent successful training round, We Got Coders is growing and we are looking to work with more senior Ruby developers to deliver_later continuous classes throughout the year.

We want to hear from senior Ruby developers who are active in the start up community, looking to compliment their skill set with teaching, mentoring and guiding junior staff. If you enjoy pair programming, take satisfaction from employing industry best practices and are an independently minded, outgoing and confident web developer then we want to hear from you.

In this flexible role, you will be working with our client base, who consist of vibrant start-ups and top agencies, working on demanding Ruby-based web projects. We specialise in training junior web developers to work on front-line projects, and the primary responsibilities for this role will be to teach, mentor, supervise, encourage, manage and inspire our trainees in their new roles.

As an instructor, you will be able to take three months out of your career to teach a motivated, enthusiastic bunch of hopefuls who are hungry to learn. Our model permits us to screen for only suitable candidates who are already exposed to some programming, many with degrees or relevant qualifications, and stick with small class sizes, where the focus is on quality, not quantity. We need more instructors to help get new recruits to the level where we can vouch for them and put them onto client projects. Your day-to-day will consist on conveying our syllabus material to the group, and working with them on hands-on exercises to ensure that they are making progress. We provide a set of course materials for you to work with, so you can focus on teaching and not writing the syllabus from scratch; however you have free reign to design your own exercises and contribute to the core syllabus.

Once the training is complete, we put out juniors onto client site. We need mentors who can work alongside them, typically spending one day a week per trainee onsite with them; but working remotely to steer their development approach, troubleshoot issues, provide quality assurance and feedback and help them to continue learning in the job.

Responsibilities

Working alongside our senior staff, you will be :

  • Teaching a group of up to 10 trainees full stack development
  • Being the first point of contact for questions, concerns, difficulties that trainees may experience
  • Providing continuous feedback to students, annotating GitHub commits etc.
  • Contributing to the course materials
  • Mentoring trainees on client site, managing their day-to-day development activity
  • Providing quality assurance to our clients, writing tests, providing QA, project management etc.
  • Promoting We Got Coders within the development community

Requirements

You will be a seasoned web development professional with considerable experience in Ruby, with clout in the Ruby community and track record that speaks for itself. You will be a proponent of open source, test-driven development and agile best practices, and have demonstrable evidence of this in your portfolio.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Over 2 years Ruby web development experience, preferably 5-10 years web development experience overall
  • A strong interest and enthusiasm about tech
  • Strong communication skills
  • A friendly and personable demeanour
  • Strong references from reputable tech companies

The following are desirable:

  • Prior teaching experience
  • Public speaking experience, especially at a Ruby conference / event
  • Relevant industry experience

How to apply

Please send a cover letter and CV to jobs@wegotcoders.com, stating why you are suitable for the role and detail your relevant experience.
