Your Instructors

Dan Garland

Dan Garland has thirteen years experience in creating web applications. After graduating from the University of Bristol with a Computer Science degree, he went on to found Ruby consultancy We Got Coders, specialising in full-stack web development, working with start-ups and agencies.

He has been teaching web development for three years as the lead instructor at We Got Coders. Previously he has taught in New York with General Assembly and has spoken at several coding workshops and meet-ups in London.

Lorin Thwaits

Lorin firmly believes that code exists in order to change the world to be a better place. Most of his professional experience has been with .NET and Java projects for the financial industry, but he loves to code recreationally as well.

He brings a deep love of code into the classroom. He has split his time evenly between doing projects and teaching over the past 20 years, and looks forward to introducing many more passionate people into the world of software development. As of late the stacks he fancies are Rails, node.js, and Apple's recently-released Swift.

Months 3 - 6 : Work Experience & Mentoring Phase

Real-World Work Experience

Consolidate your learning with real-world work experience. You’ll work onsite with a client on full stack Ruby projects, earning £20k pro rata.

Your instructor will mentor you on-site, providing support, guidance, quality-control, peer-reviews and extra training. This makes sure that you’re meeting the client’s expectations and realising your own potential.

On top of this, our programming pairs collaborate both on-site and remotely, able to resolve issues as soon as they arise. We look closely at every commit that you make, to spot any errors and catch them early.

  • Support

    Get Involved

Working alongside your mentor for 10 hours a week, you will be immersed in a client team as an entry-level web developer, contributing to commercial projects and gaining invaluable experience.

  • Consultancy

    Get Support

    Get Employed

We earmark entry-level web developer positions for our trainees at the start of the course, so that we can place you immediately with our hiring partners. Trainees typically earn between £25,000-£35,000 after six months.

  • Floobits

    Pair Programming

Our programming pairs collaborate both on-site and remotely, able to resolve issues as soon as they arise.

  • Github

    Peer Reviews

We pore over each commit that a candidate makes, spotting mistakes and improvements early.

  • Cucumber

    Quality Control

Using a test driven development approach, mentors provide QA tests to ensure the highest standards.

Months 6+: Permanent Web Developer Work

Get Employed

We partner with top Ruby teams looking for talented new web developers, which means you get access to full-stack web development project experience. It’ll help build your portfolio and take you a step closer to your first permanent web dev job.

After a successful work experience placement, we’ll find you a professional web developer role where you can expect to earn £25-35k in your first year. It might be with us, or with one of the clients we partner with – either way, it’ll be a brilliant first step in your new career.

When I arrived at We Got Coders I had a lot of doubts about my abilities and lack of experience. In a very short time We Got Coders helped me turn myself from a complete novice, to a capable web developer, managing to secure a great work placement within a couple of hours of my final presentation. I would recommend this course to anyone who's serious about getting into web development!

This is definitely a course for someone who really wants to be a web developer. The instructors really do want you to succeed. Their passion is clear to see and I never had the feeling that they didn't care about your work. They were always willing to answer questions and to give you help when you got stuck. It will be one of the most intense 3 months of your life but will reward you if you are willing to put the effort into it!

  • Tamlyn Rudolph

This course was really fantastic. The two instructors clearly cared about our progress and were determined to show us how to be exceptional developers. As a female in my late 30s, I found this a safe and positive learning environment. As a business owner and entrepreneur it gives me great satisfaction to know that I can now confidently create well tested, well written code and I am working on some MVP's as we speak.

It was through Dan's professionalism, expertise, and professional contacts that I gained the skills, experience, and exposure that was required to be placed with, and remain with, HI Hostels. I can wholeheartedly recommend him and the We Got Coders experience to anyone interested in entering (or re-skilling to enter) the web development market.

Dan worked tirelessly to advance his students' abilities as programmers. His teaching skills and scope of knowledge are paralleled only by his passion for the subject. His energetic presence in the classroom never ceased to inspire. I would not be where I am as a developer without Dan's instruction.

    • Strong passion for coding; especially web development
    • Full entitlement to live and work in the UK (unfortunately, we do not currently sponsor visa applications)
    • Able to devote at least 50 hours a week to study
